43 kids at a Charlotte-area after school program are now safer thanks to a program by QCTC and Mecklenburg EMS Agency. The children not only learned about bicycling safety but they also had a chance to ride thru a safety course. Each child also received a free bike helmet courtesy of Medic and Safe Kids Charlotte Mecklenburg. Almost every child told us that they ride bikes often but only 5 said that they had a helmet already. Of those 5, only 2 said that they wear their helmet. North Carolina law requires that children under 16 wear a helmet while riding a bicycle. The city of Charlotte and the towns of Matthews and Cornelius also require helmets for children under 16 riding any device with wheels (roller blades, scooters, bikes, etc).
